Six Days on Islands the Ferries Don’t Advertise

Nate Whitfield spent a decade sailing this stretch of coast before he ever designed a Fernway itinerary from it, and it shows: the route he built skips every dock with a gift shop and lands instead on three islands most travel agents can't find on a map.

That is the difference between a packaged tour and a trip designer who has actually stood on the pier. Fernway has built more than 500 trips this way since 2016, and the 4.9 average rating is mostly people saying some version of the same thing — they went somewhere they couldn't have found on their own.

The Birchwood Studio: A Small Building That Does a Lot

Owen Marsh designed the Birchwood Studio as a single 340-square-foot room, and then spent most of the budget making sure that room answered to its site — a north-facing clerestory for even light, and a foundation set to follow the existing grade rather than flatten it.

It is one of the smaller projects in Harbor & Pine's 60-plus completed builds, and one of the three that earned an AIA Maine chapter award.

The Argument

Every object we choose to keep has already survived a small war against convenience. It was cheaper to replace the chair, faster to buy the mug that matches nothing, easier to let the desk lamp die quietly in a drawer. The things that make it into Issue No. 14 are the ones that won that argument — not because they were expensive, but because someone decided they were worth repairing instead of replacing.

This issue asked twenty-two contributors the same question: what is the oldest object in your home that still does its job? The answers, collected across six countries, form less a survey than a quiet argument for permanence in a decade built to discourage it.

The brief was simple to state and hard to solve: a 40-year-old hardware manufacturer needed an identity that read as established without reading as dated. Northlight's answer was to strip the existing mark to its structural bones — a single interlocking form buried under three decades of gradients and drop shadows — and rebuild the system around it.

The resulting identity shipped across packaging, a rebuilt e-commerce site, and a fleet livery refresh for 40 service vehicles. Internal adoption was immediate; the client's own sales team began using the new mark on pitch decks before the formal rollout date.

Notes from the Cormorant House: Building Into a Ledge Instead of Around It

Most sites on this stretch of coast get graded flat before anyone draws a line. We asked what the house would look like if the rock ledge stayed exactly where it was — and let the section drawings answer the question.

Every production starts on location, months before a camera rolls. We spend the first weeks with the people whose story we are telling — because the right shot only exists once you understand what you are actually looking at.

These are the stills that shaped Low Tide and the Signal brand-film series, pulled from the cutting-room floor.

Buildings That Answer to Their Site

Residential and light-commercial architecture rooted in the Maine coastline.

Harbor & Pine has designed more than 60 homes and small commercial buildings out of our Portland, Maine studio since 2011. Every project starts with the site — light, grade, and weather — before it starts with a floor plan.

Principals Sarah Lindqvist and Owen Marsh lead a small team that stays on a project from first sketch to final walkthrough.

Three Steps From Idea to Itinerary

Every Fernway trip starts with a conversation, not a form. Here is how a custom itinerary comes together, start to finish.

1

Tell Us How You Want to Travel

A call with one of our trip designers — pace, budget, who is coming, and what "a good trip" actually means to you. No questionnaire, just a conversation.

2

We Design Your Itinerary

Lead trip designer Nate Whitfield and the team draft a day-by-day itinerary drawn from our partners in 30 countries, then revise it with you until it fits.

3

Travel, Supported Door to Door

Once you leave, we stay reachable for the whole trip — from a delayed connection to a last-minute reservation change.

Client: Private residence, Cushing, Maine. Completed 2023 — 2,400 sq ft, three bedrooms, cedar-clad exterior with a standing-seam roof.

The Cormorant House sits on a granite ledge overlooking the tidal flats, and the plan follows the site's slope rather than fighting it — the living spaces step down toward the water in three shallow terraces.

Design: Sarah Lindqvist and Owen Marsh, Harbor & Pine. Timber framing by a Maine-based crew the studio has worked with since 2013.
